PE-backed staffing
Separate from ownership. Check one to show only hospitals whose main group for that service is a
private-equity-backed staffing company. General staffing means the hospital's inpatient doctors
(hospitalists).
Hospitals near here
About this map
Private equity firms own hundreds of U.S. hospitals, but that ownership is rarely obvious. It's often hidden
several companies deep, and no public database is required to show it. This free map brings the public records
together so anyone can check who owns the hospitals near them.
It covers more than 9,400 hospitals and marks over 550 as confirmed private equity owned, with about 340 more
showing possible private equity involvement. Each hospital shows the owners it reported to Medicare, the evidence
behind its classification, and whether its emergency room, anesthesia or hospitalist doctors are staffed by a
private-equity-backed company. The data comes from Medicare (CMS) ownership and enrollment files, SEC fund
filings, and the Private Equity Stakeholder Project. You can browse everything in the
Tables and download it as spreadsheets.

Sources & Method
How hospitals are colored
Confirmed private equity: at least one of: the hospital reported a PE owner to
Medicare; an owner it lists reported itself as PE on another Medicare enrollment (any provider type); an owner is an exact
name match to a fund registered with the SEC as a private equity or venture capital fund; or the Private Equity
Stakeholder Project tracker lists it as currently PE-owned.
Possibly private equity: signals but no confirmation, such as owners
flagged as investment firms, owners named like known PE firms, hedge-fund owners, layered acquisition holding companies,
REIT landlords, or approximate SEC name matches. Hedge-fund-owned hospitals are shown here, not as confirmed.
Nonprofit, Government
(including VA, military and tribal), Other (for-profit or physician-owned
without any PE signal): no private equity indicators found.
ER, anesthesia and general staffing
Many hospitals contract out their emergency room doctors, anesthesia, or general staffing (hospitalists, the
doctors who care for admitted patients) to staffing companies, and several of the largest are owned by private
equity. This is shown separately from who owns the hospital.
Medicare's Doctors and Clinicians file lists each clinician's specialty and the medical group they
bill through; its Facility Affiliation file lists the hospitals they are affiliated with. For each
hospital we count which groups its emergency medicine, anesthesia and hospitalist (general staffing) clinicians
bill through.
A hospital is marked as having PE-backed staffing for a service when a group billing for at least 30% of
those clinicians (with at least 3 clinicians) belongs to a PE-backed staffing company.
Staffing companies often bill through local subsidiaries with different names. We link a subsidiary to its
parent when its mailing address in the federal NPI registry is the parent company's headquarters.
Being affiliated with a hospital does not prove a clinician works in that department, and contracts change,
so this is a likely signal, not proof. Companies whose current owner we have not yet verified are labeled.
No individual clinicians are named.
Important limits
"No PE indicators" does not prove a hospital has no private equity involvement. Ownership filed with Medicare is
self-reported, often incomplete, and usually lists only the entities directly above the hospital.
Some ownership records are out of date (for example, sponsors that sold their stake years ago).
Private equity can also be involved without owning the hospital: physician or staffing groups, management
contracts, and sale-leasebacks of the building. ER, anesthesia and hospitalist staffing is shown separately
(see above); management contracts are not yet reflected on the map.
Pins marked "approximate location" were placed at the center of the hospital's ZIP code.

Hi! I'm Eben, an Information Technology student who's desperately trying to find an ethical way to develop software in the big '26.
Why I Built This
I recently learned about the impact of private equity on the healthcare industry through Coffeezilla's most recent video. This disgusted me: putting profits over people in any sense is
deplorable, but doing it in the health sector is unforgivable. Furthermore, I discovered that no database required PE firms to make their ownership of these hospitals
known to the public, and that in many cases it was extremely hard to find, hidden a few companies deep in the ownership chain.
How I Gathered This Data
I cross-referenced multiple sources, all of which can be found on the Sources page. I believe this is currently the most comprehensive list of PE-owned hospitals available, finding about 9x more than the SEC and CMS data shows, and 12 new hospitals that the next most comprehensive dataset does not list.
Get Involved
If you would like to help me keep this data up to date, please use the Report a PE Hospital form to submit any new information you find. If you would like to help me build this site, please send a message through the Report form. If you would like to help fund the upkeep of this page
(which is cheap, but I'm also a broke college student), you can donate through the Donate tab. For press inquiries, please also contact me through the Report form. I will never put ads or a paywall on any of these projects. I don't track visitors, and I will never sell anyone's data. If this helps even one person, it will have been worth making.

Your privacy
We do not collect, harvest, sell, rent or share personal information about visitors. This site has no
accounts, no cookies, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking pixels. The only information we receive from
you is what you choose to send through the Report form.
Searches stay in your browser. When you search by ZIP code, city or hospital name, the search runs
on your own device against data already downloaded with the page. Your search is not sent to us.
"Use my location" stays in your browser. If you allow it, your browser gives your position to the
page only to center the map. We do not receive, record or store it, and the button does nothing unless you
press it and grant permission.
Map tiles come from a third party. The background map is loaded from
OpenFreeMap (or, as a fallback,
OpenStreetMap). Like any website,
those services receive your IP address and which map area is being displayed so they can send the images.
Their own privacy policies apply.
Anonymous visit counts. To know how many people use the site, our server counts page loads and
workbook downloads. Each count records only the date and time, which page or file was loaded, the name of the
website that linked to us (if any), and whether it was a phone, tablet or computer. It records no IP
address, no browser details and nothing else that could identify you, and uses no cookies.
Web hosting. The company that provides our server may keep its own standard network logs for security.
We do not use them to identify, profile or market to visitors, and we never sell them.
Reports you send us
Nothing you type into the Report a PE Hospital form is sent until you press
Submit report. It is then delivered to us by email through
Web3Forms, a form-delivery service.
Like any website, Web3Forms receives your IP address along with the report in order to deliver it; its own
privacy policy applies.
We receive only what you type. Your email address is optional; we receive it only if you enter it, and use it
only to reply to you.
We use reports only to check and correct the map. We never sell, rent or share reports or the contact details
in them, and we will not publish your name or email address without your permission.
To have your report deleted, send a request through the same form, including the email address you used, if
any.
Donations
Donations are made on PayPal's website, not this one. PayPal receives your payment details under its own
privacy
policy; this site never sees your card or bank information.
PayPal shares with us what it normally shares with anyone you pay, typically your name, email address and
the amount. We use it only to keep a record of donations and as required by law, never sell or share it, and
never add you to a mailing list.
If this ever changes, for example if we add visitor statistics, we will update this page before the change
takes effect.
About the data
All hospital information on this site comes from public sources: Medicare enrollment and ownership
files published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, SEC Form D and Form ADV filings, and, for
whether a hospital is currently PE-owned and by which firm, the Private Equity Stakeholder Project's hospital
tracker (credited). See Sources & Method.
Owners shown are organizations as reported to Medicare. We do not display the names of individual
owners, officers or directors.
Classifications such as "confirmed private equity" and "possibly private equity" are our own analysis
of those records, including automated name matching, and may contain errors. Ownership records are
self-reported, can be incomplete, and can be out of date. "No PE indicators" does not mean a hospital has no
private equity involvement.
Hospital locations are estimated from street addresses. Some are approximate and placed at the center of
the ZIP code.

If you believe a hospital is classified incorrectly, we want to know. Please include the hospital name, its
